Carter Mansion Guided Tours

As our nation turns 250 years old this year, step inside a tangible link to America’s founding. Take a guided tour of
Tennessee’s oldest frame house and enjoy the beauty of this elegant frontier home built by Colonel John Carter between
1775 and 1780. Learn about the historically significant role played by the Carter family in the early settlement of East
Tennessee while you appreciate this gem of historic preservation. Accessibility to the home includes steps and an interior
staircase. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. Maximum of 12 participants per tour

Sabine Hill Guided Tours

Enjoy a guided tour of this stately home built by Mary Patton Taylor, widow of Brigadier General Nathaniel Taylor. The
site has been described as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the State of Tennessee. Take in the colorful
and architecturally detailed interior while learning about the influential Taylor family who called Sabine Hill home in the
early 19th century. Please note, only portable toilet facilities are available at this time. Accessibility to the home includes
steps and an interior staircase. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. Maximum of 12 participants per tour

Historic Night Hike

Join Park Ranger Taylor Moorefield for a flickering lantern-lit historic hike in the dark. Hear stories of the Watauga
settlement that called this valley home in the 1770s and enjoy the atmosphere of the riverside trail as nocturnal animals
begin to stir. In this exclusive program, guests will get to enjoy a night hike after the sun has set and the park is closed to
the public. Please wear good walking shoes for this 45-minute program. Meet at the gates of Fort Watauga near the visitor
center.

Enjoy a special candlelight visit through Sabine Hill. Ranger Jason Davis will guide guests through the colorful and
architecturally detailed interior while dressed in early 19th century clothing. This elegant home will be illuminated by
candlelight, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the influential Taylor family who lived in what has been
described as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the State of Tennessee Please note, only portable toilet

Candle Dipping: An 18 th Century Craft 
Tuesday, February 10 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM

Candles were an essential source of light in the 18th century. In this hands-on program, learn the history of the candle, the
common materials used to make them, and dip your own candles to bring home with you. Ages 7 and up. Children must
be assisted by an adult to ensure the safety of all participants. Parents assisting their children but not making their own
candle do not need to pay for admission. Meet at the Talbot House inside Fort Watauga – the second cabin on the left as
you enter the fort from the sidewalk. 

For the Love of My Park: Volunteer Workday

Show Sycamore Shoals some love and join us for a volunteer workday. Activities include invasive plant removal, litter
pick-up, cabin cleaning, trail work, and much more! Bring your friends and family and join Ranger Jason Davis as we
work to ensure that this special historic site continues to be a place for future generations to enjoy! Volunteers wishing to
participate should plan on arriving at the picnic area beside the Park Visitor Center starting at 1:00pm and we will wrap up
by 4:00. Bring a water bottle, gloves, and a Volunteer Spirit! 

Furs & Pelts of the Longhunter
Saturday, February 15 3:30 PM
Cost: Free
Ever wonder why currency is often referred to as “bucks”? How did Buffalo Mountain get it’s name? Join Ranger Jason
Davis to discover first hand the various types of furs and pelts sought after by long hunters on the frontier during the 18 th
century. All ages are welcome to attend this free program in the Visitor Center lobby. 
Winter Stories by the Fire

Fellowship English Country Dancing
Sunday, February 15                                                  1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Cost: Free
Dancing was a very popular social pastime in early America. Beginners and seasoned dancers alike are all welcome to
learn early 19 th century dances. Open to anyone, with or without experience or a partner. Meet in the Gathering Room of
the park Visitor Center. Lite refreshments will be served to celebrate the Valentine’s Day weekend. Sponsored by the
Sabine Hill Social Society.

Gardening Seminar Series: Composting & Vegetable Gardening

It’s not too early to start planning & building your spring garden. Join Master Gardener Ben Hunter as he shares his
techniques and tips for growing the garden of your dreams! This session will focus on composting and planning your

Old Time Music Jam

Enjoy a mix of old time and traditional folk, Celtic and gospel music. Acoustic instruments such as fiddle, banjo, guitar,
bass, mandolin, dulcimer (both kinds), autoharp, feet (no taps) are welcome. All who are interested in playing, learning
about, or listening to old time and traditional folk music are invited. Feel free to bring a recording device for learning
purposes.

Winter Stories by the Fire

Join Park Ranger Taylor Moorefield for a seasonal story time inside a log cabin. Various traditional stories will be shared,
including some centered around the Christmas season during the 18th century. Learn about General Washington’s crossing
of the Delaware on Christmas Day, our own Landon Carter, and the revolutionary battles he fought in during the
Christmas season of 1780, as well as more far-fetched tales – like when Davy Crockett saved the world by thawing out the
sun one cold winter morning. Meet at the Talbot House inside Fort Watauga – the second cabin on the left as you enter the
fort from the sidewalk.
